We have long admired the Beijing-based FNJI (梵几) furniture brand, pronounced "fanji" founded by industrial designer Gao Guqi in 2000. The brand embodies an effort to translate traditional Chinese style into an modern sensibility and the flagship store housed in a renovated traditional Beijing courtyard house (siheyuan) in Guozijian hutong captures the spirit of the old infused with the new elegantly. The hutong houses a furniture showroom, shop, and cafe. The courtyard facing walls are replaced with glass and opens up the space to a cafe, but also visually brings the courtyard into the interior of the space. The material palette is limited but rich with warm woods, stone, and brick.
