Description:

In the past, farmers from Northern China used naturally dried hu lu (gourds) to scoop water and wash rice. Tableware and eating utensils were considered essential family belongings that connected everyone to the same table, symbolizing harmony and a sense of home. The Hulu series reinvents traditional family objects using porcelain to give new meaning to simple, everyday utensils and to encourage a reflection of the true meaning of home and gathering.

Designer: Chinese architect Yung-Ho Chang draws upon this lasting Chinese symbol as inspiration for these organically shape plates which offer infinite possibilities to preparing and sharing food. Yung Ho Chang established Atelier Feichang Jianzhu (FCJZ) in 1993. Yung was also a professor and former Head of the Architecture Department at MIT. In 2006 Yung won the Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
